When Ben introduced “Kai” to Hawk, the pack healer that was the last straw.

One evening, there was a knock on the front door. When Vartan answered it, there stood Hawk.

“Come on in, Hawk. Was’ ’sup?” Vartan tried to act casual, but from the look on the healer’s face, he had a sneaking suspicion he already knew what had brought the man there.

“Can I talk to you, privately?” Hawk asked.

“Sure, Deck and Tripp are in the house. Let’s step out here.” Vartan stepped outside, closing the door. Standing on the wraparound porch, he asked, “What’s bothering you, Hawk?”

The healer looked nervous and worried as his eyes flicked around. “Have you noticed anything going on? Say, out of the ordinary? With Ben?” he asked reluctantly.

“Oh shit. Come on in. Tripp and Deck might as well hear this, too.”

Hawk looked unsure, but trusted his beta. Stepping inside, he closed the door and followed Vartan into his house.

“Looks like we got us another witness, boys,” the first beta said, as he walked into the kitchen. Stepping over to the refrigerator, he dug Hawk out a beer. Handing it to him, he said, “Okay. Sit down and talk.”

“I know you guys are gonna think I’m nuts, but…”

“No, we’re not,” Decker soothed. “We already have a good idea what you’re gonna say, Hawk, so just spit it out.”

The healer looked from man to man.

“You already know, don’t you?” He sounded shocked.

“Depends on what you’re gonna say. If you’re gonna tell us that our alpha is talking to and interacting with people who aren’t there? Then, yeah. We know what you’re gonna tell us,” Tripp answered calmly.

Hawk’s mouth hung open. “Oh, thank gods. I thought I’d lost my mind. Wait. You’ve seen it, too?”

“Oh yeah, all of us, I’m afraid. Now, tell us what you saw and then we’ll fill you in,” Vartan ordered.

“Okay.” Hawk bit his bottom lip. “I was headed out to my truck to go see Mrs. Yamata two days ago. She’s due any day now with triplets. As I climbed into my truck, Ben walked by. He asked where I was going and how I was doing, the usual. Then said. ‘Oh, excuse me. Where’s my manners? Hawk, I’d like you to meet my mate, Kai. Kai Stamos.’” Hawk frowned. “Then he says, ‘Kai, this is Hawk, our pack healer.’ Just as normal as anything. I looked around, waiting to see someone.”

“Guys, there wasn’t anyone around but me, him, the guards and some of the pups playing. Then Ben says, ‘Say hi to Kimi for us and wish her well. He walks off with a smile on his face. I’ve been thinking this over for two days now and finally worked up the courage to talk to you about it.”

“Calm down. You’re not crazy. We’re just not too sure about Ben anymore,” Tripp said, looking painfully unhappy.

“So who is Kai Stamos, and what’s the deal?” Hawk asked, looking utterly bewildered. “Is Ben simply having some fun with us, or what?
